Sherwood Philip Evans
October 10, 1928 - October 29, 2021

 

 

Sherwood P. “Woody” Evans, 93, went to his heavenly home on October 29, 2021 after a brief illness.

 

He was born in East Hartford, CT, the son of Alberta and Philip Evans. Over the years he resided in Niantic, CT; Fairview, MA; West Springfield, MA; Burlington, VT; and most recently Wilmington, NC.

 

He was married to Arlene P. Evans on October 5, 1957 in the First Baptist Church of West Springfield, MA.

 

Woody graduated from the G.E. Apprentice School in Pittsfield, MA in 1950.  He was employed by Kaman Aircraft as a draftsman in Bloomfield, CT from 1955 to 1965 and by G.E. in Springfield, MA and Burlington, VT from 1966 to 1989.

 

He was a graduate of the US Navy’s Electronic Technician School at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center, IL. He then served with the U.S. Navy Minesweeping Force in Korea from 1951 to 1954 aboard the USS Chief, USS Mockingbird, and USS Ptarmigan.

 

He was predeceased by his wife, Arlene in 2014 and his sisters, Lois and Elaine. He is survived by his daughter, Cheryl Patton and her husband Charles Patton of Wilmington, NC; son, Gregg Evans of Bradenton, FL; brother, Alden of Puyallup, WA; grandson Tyler Patton and his wife Lauren Patton of Chagrin Fall, OH; granddaughter Brittany Turley of Wilmington, NC; and he leaves behind four great grandchildren: Aiden, Nolan, Emma, and Van.

 

Woody is remembered for his love of caning and restoring old chairs for over 38 years. Many people were blessed by his handiwork.
